General anaesthesia is commonly administered via either
- Inhalational route – commonly using volatile agents such as
- Isoflurane
- Sevoflurane
- Desflurane
- Intravenous route – most common agent used is Propofol
- This is also known as Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA)
- Due to environmental concerns regarding the volatile agents, TIVA is increasingly the anaesthetic of choice
- There are also other economic and clinical reasons why TIVA may be the better choice
